Morrell scores only Tech goal
HOUGHTON, Mich. – The Michigan Tech hockey team fell 4-1 to St. Thomas Saturday at the John MacInnes Student Ice Arena. The Tommies scored three times in the first and once in the third.
“I’m proud of our guys and proud of the way we played,” Tech coach Joe Shawhan said. “Their top guys got them a lead. We played hard and tried to battle back with momentum in the third but couldn’t find a goal. They blocked a lot of shots and their goaltenders played well.”
After a pair of St. Thomas goals in the first, Logan Morrell drew the Huskies with one, scoring his second of the season on a five-minute power play. Stiven Sardarian fed the puck to the slot for a snap shot by Isaac Gordon. It bounced off Jack Works and out to Morrell who hammered it in.
The Tommies (4-9-4, 3-6-3 CCHA) retook their two-goal lead with four-tenths of a second left before intermission when Matthew Gleason scored from Liam Malmquist and Lucas Wahlin.
There wasn’t any scoring in the second and the Huskies pressured for most of the third and then pulled goaltender Derek Mullahy for the extra attacker. Cole Miller scored into the open net with 3:29 remaining for the final tally.
Michigan Tech dominated in shots 30-17, including a 12-1 advantage in the second period. Jake Sibell started the game and earned the win with 17 saves before leaving with an injury. Aaron Trotter stopped 12 shots in the final 28:28 of the game.
Lucas Wahlin opened the game’s scoring 8:36 after puck drop from Matthew Gleason and Mason Poolman.
Liam Malmquist added to the Tommies’ lead on the power play just over 3:00 later, finding the back of the net from Chase Cheslock and Luc Laylin.
Tech was 1-for-2 on the power play and 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Huskies are 8-5-1 overall and 6-3-1 in the CCHA and wrap up the 2024 portion of their schedule next weekend at Bemidji State.
