Ouelette 20 saves for Wildcats

MANKATO, Minn. – The Northern Michigan University hockey team dropped game one of the weekend against the no. 16 Minnesota State Mavericks, falling 3-0 on Friday night.

In a heavily defensive matchup, the Wildcats (1-10-0, 0-5-0) held the Mavericks (8-4-1, 3-1-1) to 23 shots, the second-fewest shots conceded by the Wildcats and the Mavericks’ second-fewest total in a single game all season. The game total of 44 shots on goal is the fewest combined total in any of the Wildcats contests.

Grayden Slipec and Jakub Altrichter led the team in shots (7,6) and shots on goal (2,4). Jesse Tucker (10/14, 71.4%) and Altrichter (7/10, 70%) had excellent nights in the faceoff circle, as the ‘Cats held a 23-19 advantage in the dot.

The ‘Cats were successful on its only time on the penalty kill (1/1), but were unable to convert on either of its man-advantage opportunities. Both teams blocked 16 shots, led by Rasmus Larsson with four.

Ryan Ouellette made 20 saves for a .909 SV%. Alex Tracy made 21 saves to earn his third shutout of the season.

All three of the Mavericks’ goals came at even strength, including an empty-net goal to give the Mavericks its third with just 17 seconds left. Six different MSU skaters recorded a point, led by Ralfs Bergmanis with a goal and an assist.

The Wildcats will look to bounce back against the Mavericks tomorrow night, with puck-drop set for 7:07 p.m. ET.

How It Happened
In a fast-paced first period with barely any stoppages, the Mavericks opened the scoring with Will Hillman potting his first of the season. Hillman walked in down to the left faceoff dot before firing a wicked wrister past Ouellette’s ear on the short side.

The next goal came with just over four minutes to go in the second period. After some lengthy sustained offensive zone time, the Mavericks were able to score as Ralfs Bergmanis fired a seeing-eye shot through a sea of skaters that beat a screened Ouellette.

The Mavericks would ice the game after an empty net goal came with under a minute left to play.
