WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The Michigan Tech men’s basketball team wrapped up a perfect season-opening weekend with an 88-84 victory over Maryville on Saturday at the Justagame Fieldhouse.

“I’m really happy to get out of the weekend with two wins,” Tech coach Josh Buettner said. “We got ourselves in a hole in the first half and were able to come back and get it done. We competed hard all weekend, and I’m excited to get back to work next week before heading to Minnesota.”

Down by six entering the second half, Tech got its first lead of the day with 14:28 left after a 7-0 run by Pete Calcaterra. He had an old-fashioned three-point play, a fast break layup, and then was fouled on the next possession and made both free throws.

The Saints tied it up three more times in the second and then took the lead with 1:43 on the clock. Marcus Tomashek made a shot on the ensuing possession, and the Huskies milked out the win with a free throw by Tomashek and three more off the fingertips of Pete Calcaterra.

The Huskies shot 60.9 percent in the second half, and Pete Calcaterra poured in 21 points in the second 20:00.

Maryville led by as many as 10 in the first half, but Marcus Tomashek kept it close with 23 points in the opening 20:00. He hit 8-for-10 from the field and 3-for-4 from the beyond the arc.

Marcus Tomashek finished with a game-high 36 points on 12-for-18 shooting with five three-pointers. Pete Calcaterra added 21 points—all in the second half—and added 11 rebounds for the double-double. Dawson Nordgaard was also in double figures for the Huskies with 17 points.

Keyyaun Bathman (24), Dewayne Vass (19), Anthony Holden (15), and Lucas Burton (12) scored in double figures for Maryville.

Tech continues non-conference play next weekend with a trip to Minnesota. The Huskies play at Winona State on Saturday (Nov. 16) and Concordia-St. Paul on Sunday (Nov. 17).
