Peterson, Tucker, Ewart, Romer will be alternate captains
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Head coach Dave Shyiak and the Northern Michigan University hockey team have announced its leadership group ahead of the 2024-25 season.
“I’m really excited to announce our leadership group,” adds head coach Shyiak. “We have a unique blend of personalities and believe they can help lead this young team with many fresh faces through the ups and downs of the season ahead. They’ve all been great in slowly building our culture within and how we want to represent our university and community.”
Tanner Latsch will don the captaincy for the Green and Gold, the 56th different skater to do so. Latsch returns to the ‘Cats looking to build off early success he found before a season-ending injury a year ago, when he earned back-to-back CCHA weekly honors, was named CCHA Rookie of the Month, and was runner-up for Hockey Commissioners’ Association (HCA) Rookie of the Month honors after tallying seven goals and an assist in eight games.
Marquette, Michigan native Jakob Peterson and Jesse Tucker will both be alternate captains for the 2024-25 season, wearing letters both at home and on the road.
Peterson returns for a fourth season with the ‘Cats and will look to build off a strong finish to his 2023-24 campaign, where he earned playing time in all situations for the Wildcats.
Tucker, joining the ‘Cats after stints at Michigan State and Clarkson, is familiar with leadership positions, as he served as team captain for the Green Bay Gamblers of the USHL prior to his collegiate career.
Tynan Ewart and Matthew Romer round out the alternate captaincy, as Tynan will wear an ‘A’ at home and Matthew will don the ‘A’ on the road.
Ewart is a sophomore defenseman transfer from St. Cloud State who played 19 games as a freshman under Shyiak at St. Cloud. Prior to his collegiate career, Ewart was an alternate captain for Battlefords North Stars of the SJHL.
Romer is a sophomore forward transfer from Arizona State. Romer is also familiar with being in a position of leadership, as he was team captain for the Omaha Lancers of the USHL prior to his collegiate career.
The ‘Cats start the season with an exhibition contest at Michigan Tech on Saturday, October 5, 2024, before opening its regular season with a road series against no. 11 Colorado College.
