3-0 over Regis; 3-1 over Gannon

GOLDEN, Colo. – Michigan Tech began its 2024 volleyball season with a pair of wins at the Oredigger Classic on the campus of the Colorado School of Mines on Friday. The Huskies swept No. 13 Regis 3-0 in the morning and defeated Gannon 3-1 in the afternoon.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better way to start the season,” Tech coach Matt Jennings said. “We were solid in a lot of areas of our game. It was nothing flashy. We just did our jobs and stayed focused on one play at a time.”

Michigan Tech 3, No. 13 Regis 0

All three sets were close with the Huskies winning 25-21, 26-24, and 25-23. There were 29 ties and 13 lead changes, including 14 ties and six lead changes in the third set alone. Regis had more kills than Tech but the Huskies edged the Rangers in blocks and aces.

Meg Raabe tallied a match-high 15 kills while hitting .270 and adding three digs, a pair of aces, and two blocks. Jacqueline Yancy added eight kills, Kaycee Meiners had six kills and five blocks, and Tricia Kennedy added four kills and three blocks. Tess Hayes set the attack with 34 assists and Amelia Albers led the Huskies with 10 digs.

Michigan Tech 3, Gannon 1

Tech won 25-10-, 26-24, 24-26, and 25-17. The Huskies battled back from a five-point deficit in the third and held match point but the Golden Knights pushed it to a fourth set. A 9-2 run in the fourth put momentum in favor of the Huskies and they closed out the match.

Meg Raabe again had a match-high with 17 kills while adding six digs and a pair of blocks. Rachel Zurek tallied 16 kills while hitting .538. Jacqueline Yancy (13) and Kaycee Meiners (10) also had double digit kills. Tess Hayes racked up 51 assists and Amelia Albers led with 20 digs.
