DETROIT, Mich. (WZMQ)— Tuesday morning, Secretary of State and Democratic nominee for governor Jocelyn Benson cast her ballot at Louis Pasteur Elementary School in Detroit.
Benson was joined by family members and supporters for the occasion.
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is term-limited and will leave office at the start of next year. Republican nominee John James and Benson are the frontrunners, ahead of several third-party candidates in the race.
“I didn’t fight in Iraq to come home and give up on Michigan. I’ve never left anyone behind on the battlefield, and I’m not starting now. This election will shape the next 8 years of our state. The future is in YOUR hands,” James wrote on social media Tuesday morning.
Benson was elected statewide twice to serve as Michigan’s secretary of state. She’s hoping to win statewide again, but this time, for governor.
WZMQ 19 News Washington correspondent Brendan Scanland spoke with Detroit voters to hear what they hope the next governor brings to Lansing.
“I’m hoping more of the same. So concentration on school, on higher ed especially, how do we, you know, help folks see the importance of that? How are we helping move us into a more diversified state? We, at least in Detroit, we tend to be ‘car, car, car.’ And I think it would be great if we had more diversity of the things that bring money into the state. I think the next governor could look at that and how we diversify,” said Jesse Cox, a Detroit voter.
