Finishes first at Warrior Challenge
MARQUETTE, Mich. – Northern Michigan cross country runner Ella DeBruyn has been named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Women’s Cross Country Athlete of the Week for the second consecutive week following another individual victory at Saturday’s WSU Warrior Challenge in Detroit.
DeBruyn continued her impressive stretch with a first-place finish in 21:29.9, edging UIndy’s Elise Peckinpaugh by more than two seconds to claim her second straight individual title. Her time was just seconds shy of her career best.
The junior’s victory marked her second consecutive meet win after earning her first collegiate individual title at the Lucian Rosa Invite. With back-to-back victories, DeBruyn has quickly established herself as one of the top runners in the GLIAC.
DeBruyn’s performance helped Northern Michigan capture the team title in dominant fashion. The Wildcats finished with 35 points, 40 ahead of runner-up Saginaw Valley State, while host Wayne State placed third with 78 points.
Northern Michigan will look to carry its momentum into this week when they head to the Husky Invitational in Houghton.
