Lightning confirmed to be cause for Craig Lake Fire

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Overnight rain on Monday and continued precipitation throughout Tuesday have helped keep fire activity low on the Ridge Fire and Craig Lake Fire, located in Marquette and Baraga counties in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula.

Firefighters have used the reduced activity on the Ridge Fire to their advantage by focusing on critical firefighting efforts. Crews worked to gain access to remote areas of the fire and utilized hose-lays, leaf blowers, and hand lines to directly attack the fire along its edges. Additionally, efforts were concentrated on building containment lines where land conditions allowed. Despite progress, the Ridge Fire is still estimated to cover 450 acres and remains 20% contained. A total of 53 firefighters are currently working on the Ridge Fire, supported by the DNR.

The Craig Lake Fire, situated north of Craig Lake State Park, is estimated at 600 acres and is also 20% contained. The reduced fire activity enabled firefighters to work on establishing access routes to the fire area while using hand tools to create containment lines where feasible. However, the location poses significant challenges, as it is extremely remote with rugged, hard-to-reach terrain. The DNR has confirmed that the Craig Lake Fire was caused by a lightning strike. Between October 5 and October 8, thunderstorms moved through the region, producing lightning strikes across the Upper Peninsula. It is common for lightning strikes to smolder for several days before weather conditions, such as high winds, ignite dry fuels and spark a wildfire. A total of 19 firefighters are actively working on the Craig Lake Fire.

Authorities are advising residents and visitors in the area to remain cautious and stay updated on fire developments as crews continue to make progress under improved weather conditions.
