MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Bay de Noc Community College and Northern Michigan University have joined together to provide Bay students with easier abilities to transfer to the university for a bachelor’s degree.
The 2026-27 semester begins a three-year plan between the two schools, providing current and new Bay students who plan to become future wildcats with direct support from both locations. Bay students who have confirmed their plans to continue a bachelor’s degree with NMU can now be admitted to Northern with a concurrent non-degree undergrad student status.
“Bay and NMU have a great relationship and partnership to hep students all around the U.P., and this further strengthens that,” said Bay College Vice President of Student Affairs, Dr. Travis Blume. “NMU and Bay college will be supporting those students from the beginning.”
It’s what NMU Admissions Director Kari Garcia says ensures a seamless transition from the community college to the university level.
“This smooths it out for a student and creates a bit of transparency and allows students to see that exact path for themselves,” she said.
Once on board the program, Bay students will have full access to NMU academic advising, NMU credentials, access to events at NMU, and a free official transcript from Bay sent to the university.
“It has a lot of uniqueness, being able to take those great classes at Bay and have those support systems there, but also seeing how much further their degree could go,” said Garcia.
The program is set over into the fall of 2029, but both institutions are hopful for it to continue further. Efforts are also being made to put a check box directly on a Bay de Noc application about a student’s interest in NMU.
