ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Saturday, organizations across Delta County teamed up to kick off this year’s Toys for Tots campaign.
Marine Corps Detachment 444 held its annual Fall Family Fun Day at the U.P. State Fairgrounds. Now in its eighth year, the event is a partnership with the U.P. Steam & Gas Engine Association, the Sisters of Steam, the Christian Motorcycle Association, and other community volunteers.
In addition to carnival games, bounce houses, photo opportunities, and other activities, families enjoyed the always-anticipated Touch a Truck. Kids got to sit behind the wheel of police cars, hop inside EMS vehicles, learn how linemen keep the lights on, help firefighters rescue a dummy, and experience other jobs that keep their community running.
The only price to attend the Fall Family Fun Day was a donation of a new toy. In return, each child was sent home with a pumpkin.
“It’s great to see these kids come in here with smiles on their faces,” said Toys for Tots coordinator John Jamison. “It’s a community event that shows that they can contribute to the wellness and well-being of other kids within our community.”
Delta County residents will now see Toys for Tots donation boxes popping up at local businesses, including Walmart and Menard’s. To sign up for Toys for Tots in your community, visit toysfortots.org.
