ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – After two and a half decades in office, Delta County Clerk and Register of Deeds Nancy Przewrocki will retire on October 1.
It was the year 2000 when Przewrocki’s brother-in-law suggested she run for the position.
“I kind of looked at him like, ‘Why would I do that?'” Przewrocki laughed. “He knew that the clerk at that time, Wally Thorsen, was retiring, and he thought that I would make a good clerk. I had been in contact with the Menominee County Clerk and with Wally to find out what the job involved, and after looking it over good, I thought, ‘Well, why not? I can do this.'”
She won her first four-year term in that election. In the following years, she won six more.
“It’s been a good run,” she said.
Through her work, Przewrocki has been part of some of the biggest moments in citizens’ lives.
“I’ve done, like, 600 marriages,” she said. “There’s been many occasions where I’d come in on the weekend to get a marriage license to somebody. Getting that certificate to them is a big deal.”
Running elections is one of the hardest parts of the job, but it’s also one of her favorite parts.
“There’s a satisfaction when they’re done, and everything has gone correctly,” said Przewrocki. “It’s been incredible working with the local clerks. They’re always trying to improve. We all meet monthly, and they’re so helpful to each other. They really work well together, so it’s an awesome group to work with.”
The job has changed significantly over the years.
“A lot more technology, a lot more election security, which has made a lot more work, of course,” Przewrocki said. “The equipment has evolved, and it’s become better. There’s a lot more testing of that. Even with vital records, everything has become more electronically done. We used to get the paper birth certificates and death certificates. Now, those are done electronically through the State. We’re always working hard to be as efficient as possible.”
What hasn’t changed is the dedication of her team at the County Clerk’s Office.
“I have excellent staff,” said Przewrocki. “They’ve been incredible through the years. They make the job doable. I can depend on them. They’re here to help the public, and they do a fantastic job with that.”
Although it is difficult to leave, Przewrocki believes Delta County will be in good hands. As she prepares for her final days as clerk, she is grateful for the experiences she has had.
“It’s been my pleasure working for the citizens of Delta County,” she said. “I want to thank them for their support through the years. When you can help somebody get something done, it is a great satisfaction. It’s a good feeling when you can help people.”
Once Przewrocki has officially retired, a judge will appoint Delta County’s next clerk.
