On Tuesday, September 15, the Michigan Special Olympics held a Law Enforcment Torch Run. As part of Flame of Hope week, dozens of runs around the state of Michigan help raise awareness for the Special Olympics, which will be holding their World Games next year. Special Olympics Michigan originally set for a goal of $75,000 dollars raised, have exceeded that mark at over $140,000 dollars raised.
The events and runs for the community are all in the same goal of providing an unforgettable experience for athletes.
“It’s the most amazing feeling ever,” said Special Olympics Michigan Executive Council Member Carla White. “I’ve been doing this for 26 years, and I was originally from downstate and moved up here and kept it going up here. I now coach five different sports here in the Marquette area. It’s the athletes, they just make you such a better person, they really do. So anything I can do to help them, I pretty much will do anything.”
The Special Olympics World Games are set to begin in Chile in October of 2027.
