CHIPPEWA COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Michigan State Police (MSP) troopers have arrested a California man for breaking into a room at the Paradise Lakefront Lodge and stealing cash.
On September 3, a trooper from the MSP Sault Ste. Marie Post responded to a reported theft that had occurred at the Paradise Lakefront Lodge the previous evening. The investigation found that a man had unlawfully entered a hotel room and had stolen approximately $3,040.
Following a preliminary investigation and a review of surveillance footage, the suspect was identified as 35-year-old Antonio Murphy, a California man working seasonally in the Paradise area.
The trooper located Murphy and informed him he was under arrest. Murphy resisted arrest and fled on foot. After giving commands to stop, the trooper deployed a department-issued TASER, temporarily incapacitating Murphy.
Murphy was evaluated for minor injuries sustained after he resisted arrest and fell to the ground, following the TASER deployment. He was medically cleared and lodged in the Chippewa County Jail.
On September 4, Murphy was arraigned on one count of first-degree home invasion, larceny in a building, and assaulting/resisting a police officer. His bond was set at $10,000 cash with tether and other standard conditions. He is next due in court on September 17.
Thanks to additional investigative efforts, the stolen money was recovered and will be returned to the victims.
