Marquette’s Lorens scores twice for Wildcats
CEDARVILLE, Ohio — The NMU women’s soccer team rounded out its non-conference slate with a decisive 3-1 victory over the Northwood Timberwolves.
The Wildcats (3-0-1, 0-0-0 GLIAC) downed G-MAC foe Northwood (1-3-0, 0-0-0 G-MAC) thanks to an impressive offensive showing. Five Wildcats found themselves on the score sheet today, led by Isabella Lorens, who scored twice in the second half, adding a brace to her name. The senior now has two goals and three assists in four games to start the 2026 campaign.
Freshman Sole Corley opened the scoring with her first career Wildcat goal after finishing off a sweet passing play from forwards Alyse Daavettila and Lily Senese, and defender Irene Kiilunen worked her free-kick magic again, as a deep set-piece found the head of Lorens.
The Wildcats outshot the Timberwolves 16-5 for the match, including an impressive 11-2 margin in the opening 45 minutes.
“After a tough game on Friday, we knew we would be in for another battle today,” added head coach Erin Egolf when speaking to nmuwildcats.com post-match. “We were all over them in the first 15 minutes, and Solé scored a deserved team goal. We put [the Timberwolves] under a lot of pressure and created chances, which was good to see, and then Bella scored two nice goals in the second half to put the game away.”
Along with netminder Carly Sides, who made two saves from three on target, the Wildcats got full 90-minute efforts from defenders Riley Hill and Kiilunen. The other half of the back line, Madalyn Nissen (84 minutes) and Ava Buhlman (83), were the only other ‘Cats to log 80+ minutes, and were followed by Gretchen Ellis as the only other Wildcat over 70 minutes played.
The ‘Cats saw nine student-athletes make appearances off the bench today, highlighted by Izzy Armstrong (40), Cecelia Wille (35), and 24 minutes from Christina Roberts and Ema Delgado.
NMU only allowed five shot attempts, three on target, and two corner kicks over the course of the game to the Timberwolves, all of which are season lows for the team facing the Green and Gold. The ‘Wolves lone goal came from Reagan Nolan, scoring in the 70th minute to make it 3-1.
“I’m not thrilled with conceding, but we are coming home with 4 points from a road trip against competitive in-region opponents, and that is huge. This group works so hard, and we have had really good soccer moments through our non-conference schedule.”
The Wildcats will now shift into its GLIAC slate of matches, exiting the non-conference schedule unbeaten at 3-0-1 and out-scoring the opposition 8-4. The Wildcats open the conference schedule at home, welcoming the current No. 5 team in the country and No. 1-ranked team in the Midwest region, the Grand Valley State Lakers, to the NMU Soccer Field on Friday, September 11, at 3 p.m. ET.
“We have to take all of the positives into the upcoming weekend; our first GLIAC matches at home are going to test us, but I’m confident that our team is ready to compete at a high level and give both opponents great games. Well done to all of our players; we are getting contributions from everyone, and we will absolutely need that to continue through the course of our conference matchups.”
