MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A statewide cohort of researchers with the Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE) visited Marquette on Thursday to take part in a beach grass planting project.
The Michigan Healthy Climate Fellows is a non-profit organization specializing in tackling outcomes of climate change and slowing further damage. Each year, the cohort joins together for an EGLE-sponsored retreat, and this year it was held in the Upper Peninsula.
EGLE Public Information Officer Jeff Johnston explains that as we’re seeing stronger weather patterns, the risk of erosion has become much higher in recent years… something the project looks to prevent.
“You’re able to make that shoreline more resilient, it’s less likely to collapse into the lake,” he said. “So this is part of a natural ability of a lakeshore that we’re restoring by planting those grasses.”
The Michigan Healthy Climate Fellows are currently searching for new cohort members into September. More information can be found on michigan.gov.
