WASHINGTON, D.C. — Canada is responding to the Trump administration’s latest tariffs with billions of dollars in new levies on American goods.
Canada is imposing 15%-50% tariffs on more than 700 U.S. products.
The move is in response to President Donald Trump’s 50% tariffs on Canadian paper, lumber, alcohol and dairy products.
Trump has also threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian vehicles and auto parts.
The escalation follows the collapse of trade talks between the two countries last Friday. That collapse resulted in a sharp escalation between the Trump administration and Canadian officials in recent days.
Canadian officials said today they want to get back to the negotiating table and end the escalating feud.
“I want to make a deal, a good deal for the American people, a good deal for the Canadians. And we’re the two greatest countries in the world where each other’s number one customer,” said Doug Ford, the premier of Ontario. “It’s time to get back to the table. And let’s negotiate a fair deal because it’s hurting the U.S., it’s hurting Canada.”
Canada also threatened to limit some exports to the U.S., including electricity, which could impact parts of New York, Michigan and Minnesota.
