MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Monday evening, the Marquette Area Public School (MAPS) Board of Education held its final regular meeting before students return for the 2026-27 school year.
After a successful $60 million bond passed in May, this summer has held a heavy focus on preparing for the multiple projects set to begin in 2027. At this meeting, representatives from Miron Construction presented a rundown of that updated gameplan, while working alongside IDI Architecture, and GEI Consultants.
“We have a great team of people that have been working on this project for years,” said Superintendent Zack Sedgwick. “This is a huge step in the right direction, and we will certainly be very open and honest with the community as we complete this project.”
These updates are expected to continue quarterly with the board, while the district adjusts to the plan’s roughly $100 million dollar ask. A schedule and project rundown can be found here.
As a new law banning cell phones during instructional time will be in place this fall, students will need to keep them in their lockers, unless in the case of emergency. Segwick says the district has held similar regulations over the past couple of years, but this law will further benefit the engagement of its students.
“We want to give them a safe place at school where they can get away from their screens and engage with each other, our curriculum, and our talented staff,” he said. “I support it because I think we need to move in that direction, and I think we need to help our kids from excessive use of these devices.”
Marquette Area students will return to school on September 8. The district’s next board meeting will take place on September 21.
