LANSING, Mich. (WMZQ) – Following a recent challenge to her campsign’s integrity, a state review for independent candidate Sara Cambensy finds her to still be eligble for the 38th State Senate race in November.
Staff from the Michigan Board of State Canvassers say Cambensy surpassed the number of valid qualifying petitions, after Marquette resident Linda Donckers challenged the campsign last month.
The challenge called for the rejection of 1,247 signatures across Cambensy’s petition sheets due to missing dates, invalid addresses and missing circulator information. It also included a claim that her campaign manager Jason Chapman’s signatures were forged, and that his relation to the democratic party misaligned with Cambensy’s.
Staff found these signatures to agree with Chapman’s signature on file, and that his own party affiliation was not a legal requirement to circulate her votes.
The board found 197 invalid signatures and 2,142 valid signatures, still leaving Cambensy with 642 signatures over the 1,500 needed to land on the ballot.
The Board of State Canvassers will determine whether the petitions are sufficient on Monday, August 17.
