HARVEY, Mich. (WZMQ) – With a new school year around the corner, Silver Creek Church is holding a backpack and school supply giveaway event this Saturday.
Back to school season can be exiciting and daunting at the same time. For parents, this comes with spending potentially hundreds of dollars in supplies in the weeks leading up, with hand-me-downs and reusage being a common way out of it.
For two decades, Silver Creek Church has increasingly grown its mission to aid in this process as much as they can, with their annual Backpack SOS (Support Our Students) event. Starting in 2006 with about 50 backpacks to hand out, this weekend they will have about 900.
This year will also include a partnership with Convoy of Hope, to provide additional hygene kits, food, and household items.
“There are so many things that people are going to have access to at one time from their vehichles,” said Silver Creek Church Lead Pastor, Kevin Taylor. “They can stay in the car and get what they need, it’s a great opportunity.”
Taylor says with the church’s experience in its Feeding America drive-up events, directions for this weekend should be quick and organized. Once families arrive, they will provide the grades of their children, along with their needed supplies to receive a selection of items based on age.
“There’ll be several lines in our parking lot where people will be able to pull in and know exactly where they’re supposed to be,” he said. “Children will be able to pick their backpacks from the car.”
Backpack SOS will take place in the Silver Creek Church parking lot (219 Silver Creek Rd, Marquette, MI 49855) on Saturday August 15, from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m., but the church says families tend to arrive very early.
