MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Marquette County Board of Canvassers met Thursday morning at the 96th District Courthouse to begin the process of certifying Tuesday’s primary election.
The board, made up of two democrats and two republicans, takes a look at all votes-per-candidate across each precinct in the county to signify a correct count, including the addition of late or overseas ballots.
Thursday’s meeting began the process of sifting through over 19,500 votes, which could continue across multiple days. With such a heavy ballot this primary, voter turnout reached 35% across Marquette County, compared to 29% in the 2024 primary.
County Clerk Linda Talsma says it was a much larger turnout than the average primary.
“It shows that there were more voters out there that cared about this election, which was awesome,” she said. “I’m not sure which race brought them out, but that was the highest percentage that I’ve had in many years. So, thank you to all the voters that turned out for that election.”
The board will complete the certification and release the official numbers by no later than Tuesday, August 11.
