Marquette County residents vote in favor of MarqTran operating millage

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A majority of Marquette County voters bubbled in favor of continuing funds for the Marquette County Transit Authority operating millage on Tuesday.

Residents have agreed to provide six-tenths of a mill ($0.60 per $1,000 of taxable property value) through 2032. Taxes collected across the first year are expected at approximately $2,104,700, allowing continued operations for MarqTran and the possibility to implement new and updated systems.

In an interview with WZMQ 19 last week, MarqTran Director Bill Geller said without the funds, nearly all of MarqTran’s services would be cut.

“The millage money wouldn’t just go away, the state and federal could also,” he said. “Covering a county of 1,800 square miles, we’re the biggest county in Michigan. Last year we did about 200,000 fixed-route rides, and about 32,000 door-to-door rides.”

In total, 18,585 voters applied their vote to the millage, with 12,926 yeses and 5,659 nos.
