ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – On Sunday, a semi-truck rolled onto its side in Escanaba. A passerby jumped into action to help the people inside.
Around 10:30 p.m., local man Jared Bender and his wife came across the crash while driving near the intersection of I Road and 18th Road. He then noticed a man standing on the cab.
“I pulled over, rolled down the window, and said, ‘Is everything okay?'” Bender said. “I hopped out of the vehicle, and I said, ‘Is there anybody else in the cab?’ He said, ‘Yeah, there’s two people in there.'”
Bender grabbed a ladder from his vehicle to help them escape. He then noticed a tipover valve that was leaking diesel fuel.
“I got a piece of wire, bent over the piece of rubber tubing, and sealed that off just to stop any diesel from coming,” said Bender. “Then, I set up the ladder. Right around that time, the Delta County Sheriff was there, and I just held the ladder.”
The three individuals in the cab were able to exit safely on the ladder. Bender says he is glad that he had the opportunity to provide some help in their time of need.
“I think it’s a beautiful thing to be able to show people God’s love by loving people in sacrificial ways that we can,” he said.
WZMQ 19 News has reached out to the Delta County Sheriff’s Office to learn more about the cause of the crash and the extent of the damage. This article will be updated when that information becomes available.
