MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – Wildfires in Canada are causing hazy skies across the Upper Peninsula this week. In addition to potential health hazards, air quality concerns are causing cancellations for some U.P. events.

Wednesday afternoon, the Marquette DDA canceled its July 15 Downtown Farmers Market.

“While we always strive to provide a consistent and welcoming market experience, the safety of our community is our top priority,” market staff stated in a news release.

The DDA has also canceled the Music on Third event scheduled for Thursday, July 16. Over in Negaunee, the City Band called off its Wednesday night concert, and the regularly scheduled Miner Market has also been canceled. In Delta County, the Escanaba City Band has postponed its weekly concert until Thursday, July 16.

Health officials say the air quality could be harmful to certain individuals—particularly older adults, children, and those with heart or respiratory issues. The Marquette County Health Department says residents can protect themselves by staying indoors, keeping windows and doors closed, and using an air purifier if possible.
