NWS Marquette urges safety during record-breaking U.P. heat

MARQUETTE COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – While lakeshores were full around Marquette on Monday and Tuesday, it’s important to keep safety in mind while taking in some of this record-breaking heat.

Warning Coordination Meteorologist Joe Phillips of National Weather Service Marquette says the last time the station reported a similar height in temperature was in July of 1988, reaching 99 degrees.

“We do know a couple of areas in the U.P. did get into the hundreds or close to one hundred on Monday,” he said. “While we didn’t break the all-time record here, we still are seeing record breaking heat across the region.”

While enjoying or avoiding the extreme heat, remember to limit physical activity, take breaks indoors and stay hydrated throughout your day. Into the evening and over the next few days as the heat drops, make sure to continue monitoring yourself and others after long heat exposures.

“Even if we dip into the 70’s overnight, that’s still above normal temperatures and your body still is being exposed to that heat for a longer period of time,” said Phillips. “Take it easy, take breaks, check in on your neighbors.”

Of course, the summer weather never keeps a crowd away from the beach. As some enjoy as much sun as they can get, others say they like to keep a safe distance.

“We definitely look for the shade, especially when it’s this hot,” said Negaunee residents Lars Rahm and Tina LeClaire. “We’ve got a nice big blanket we can hang out on and go swimming, have a picnic.”

“It’s been really hot, but being able to enjoy the heat on my own terms has been really nice,” said Russel Holbrook, visiting from Wisconsin. “Bring sunscreen, I didn’t remember my towel today, but that’s always good to grab.”

If you’re stuck without air conditioning this summer, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office has also released a list of 11 public spaces used as cooling shelters in the county. That list is as follows:
