SANDS TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WZMQ) – Delta Air Lines will temporarily suspend its nonstop service between Marquette Sawyer Regional Airport and Minneapolis-St. Paul beginning just after Labor Day. The seasonal change means travelers will have to connect through Detroit or Chicago until the Minneapolis route returns later in the year. The suspension of service is due in part to increased fuel costs and lower passenger volume. Airport officials say the adjustment is part of Delta’s routine seasonal scheduling and encourage passengers to check flight availability when making travel plans.
So, we’re looking at March or April that we’d start up again. But it has been stressed that this is just a temporary suspension. It’s primarily due to high fuel costs, operating costs, and lower expected utilization of the flight in the winter months. It is expected to come back,” said Airport manager David Erhart.
Erhart says the airport has seen passenger volumes return to levels before COVID crippled the airline industry. In other good news, Sawyer Regional Airport will soon see the addition of United Airlines with flights in and out of Marquette to Chicago O’Hare Airport.
