ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – This week, farmers’ markets are opening for the season across the U.P., including in Escanaba.
The Escanaba Farmers Market held its opening day on June 3. Local vendors filled the Downtown Marketplace, selling fresh eggs and vegetables, homemade breads, crafts, pet supplies, and other goods.
Many vendors have become market regulars, like yarn producer Ricky Lacasse of Sheltered Shetlands in Ford River.
“I raise Shetland sheep,” he said. “I have somebody come to shear my sheep, and I hand-spin the yarn.”
Now in his third year with the market, he says interest continues to grow season after season.
“It’s a good outlet for me for selling yarn to local people, which is what I originally wanted to do, try to keep it affordable as much as possible so they can get a decent wool yarn without too much of an expense,” Lacasse said.
The Escanaba Farmers Market runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Wednesdays and from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturdays. For updates throughout the season, follow the Escanaba Farmers Market Facebook page.
