MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Manistique art center is showcasing two U.P. artists who capture the wonder of nature in their work.
Wild and Whimsical opens this weekend at the Lake Effect Community Arts Center. The exhibition features oil painter Avery Graham, who creates eye-catching portraits of animals, and Steve Wirtz, who depicts wildlife in mid-movement with paper mache.
Although their mediums of choice are quite different, both artists utilize color and light to bring their subjects to life.
“Sometimes in life, we get drudged down with the paperwork and the boring things and all the things that have to get done that we don’t give ourselves time to just play,” said Lake Effect Operations Manager Katie Birdsley. “That’s what this exhibit is for. It’s for play, for joy and light, and to just kick off the summer in a whimsical way.”
Wild and Whimsical opens on Saturday, June 6, with a public reception from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Through June 27, it will be available to view Mondays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wirtz will also host paper mache workshops throughout the first week of June. To register, visit lakeeffectarts.org.
