MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – The latest beverage craze has landed in downtown Marquette. It’s called Girly Pop. Perveyors of “dirty soda.”
There’s a new girl in town, and she’s pretty sweet! I’m talking about Girly Pop, a new twist on the traditional soda fountain.
“Essentially, what it is is you’re taking a soda base, and you’re decorating it with fun flavors and creams and different syrups and everything like that to create this wonderful, delicious drink,” said Girly Pop owner, Brooke Grondin.
Girly Pop is capitalizing on the dirty soda craze that’s sweeping the nation. Dirty soda is essentially any canned soft drink with additional flavorings like cream, coconut, or fruit-flavored syrup, including sugar-free options, and the fan favorite, the build-your-own.
“You can come in and pick your flavors and pick your soda bases and swap for unlimited combinations of what you can come up with,” explained Grondin.
Girly pop has also added fun amenities like a photo booth, jewelry, and customized clothing, all in an atmosphere tailored to a younger crowd or just the young at heart.
“I am a repeat customer. I frequently visited their drive-through in Marquette, and now with the location down here, I figured I’d kind of spread the wealth and help give them some business at this location as well,” said repeat customer, Renee DeRocha.
Girly Pop started as a food vendor at local farmers’ markets, then came a food truck, a drive-thru, and now an actual storefront. Grondin also has licensee partnerships nationwide.
“So we have girly pops in Denver, Memphis, Florida, Arizona, New York, we’re all over the place,” said Grondin.
Dirty soda originated in Utah about 15 years ago and has since become a nationwide beverage phenomenon, even here in Marquette.
