MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Hundreds of Northern Michigan University students presented their research with the public on Thursday at the university’s 30th annual Celebration of Student Scholarship.

Around 250 unique student research projects were presented through both Jamrich and Harden Halls, including local findings in biology, clinical sciences, sports medicine, and more.

“We’re celebrating student’s work that normally you wouldn’t see every day,” said Sophomore and Environmental Science major Madisen Thatcher, presenting research on Land Use and Global Biodiversity Loss.

With each student at a different point in their learning career, some projects are just taking off, while others have been ongoing for years.

“I did this research as part of the Freshman Fellows program, so I’ve been working on this since September,” said Freshman and Bio Physiology major Laura Stockinger, presenting research on Carbohydrate Intake for Recovery in Aerobic Athletics, focused on women’s swimming.

“I started this my senior year in my undergrad here, so about a year and a half,” said Master’s of Exercise Science second year, Declan Stratford, presenting his research on the Validity and Reliability of Arterial Palpation to Measure Arterial Occlusion Pressure.

“I’ve been doing this for three years since I was a freshman, I really wanted to get involved with research early,” said Junior and Biology major Hosana Brindle, presenting A Comparative Study of Zebrafish and Burbot Wound Healing.

Most projects involved studying alongside professors and instructors, writing up countless hours of research. After so long, some of these students are ready for the next step.

“I’m actually going to be publishing in the next few weeks,” said Brindle.

“I have most of my data collected, but I’m just finishing up the manuscript hoping to get it published in a good journal,” said Stratford.

Aside from poster presentations within the common spaces, some students had the chance to give their own lecture presentations. Overall, the annual event wrapped up those hours of research with a rewarding experience.
