ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Delta County officials are urging citizens to stay off of the roads for the duration of the blizzard currently hitting the U.P.

Late Monday morning, the Delta County Road Commission announced that it has suspended operations until conditions improve. Anyone with an emergency is advised to call 911.

“Stay safe, remain where you are at and please be patient until this lets up,” the Road Commission posted on Facebook.

In Escanaba, the City is has declared several streets impassable due to heavy snow accumulation, as well as strong winds creating significant snow drifts. The Public Works Department is currently operating with eight plow trucks, two graders, and two loaders, after one loader broke down on Friday.

The department states that crews are working as quickly and safely as possible to open major and local streets and alleys to restore access. Residents are asked to avoid unnecessary travel until the roadways can be cleared. Numerous vehicles have gotten stuck, blocking roads and alleyways and forcing plow trucks to come to complete stops and reroute.

Anyone with questions is asked to contact Public Works Director Kent Dubord at 906-786-1842 or kdubord@escanaba.org

According to Delta County Emergency Management, 959 customers were without power as of 10:45 a.m. The agency states that if there becomes a need for any warming centers, citizens should contact Delta County Central Dispatch. Click here for a list of emergency and non-emergency phone numbers.
