Tomashek scores 27; Huskies tied with NMU in the GLIAC at 14-4

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. — The No. 12 nationally-ranked Michigan Tech men’s basketball team earned a series sweep over Ferris State in a 79-68 decision at the Jim Wink Arena on Monday evening.

The Huskies elevate to 23-5 overall and back in a tie atop the GLIAC with Northern Michigan, at 14-4. Ferris State falls to 10-15 overall and 7-11 in the league.

Marcus Tomashek led all scorers with 27 points, connecting on 6-of-10 3-pointers while adding five assists and four rebounds. Nate Abel and Dawson Nordgaard also reached double figures with 12 points, respectively.

Gabe Smith had a game-high 10 rebounds and three assists as Josh Terrian tied his career-high six assists to go with seven rebounds and five points.

“I’m just happy to get the win with the last four games on the road,” said Michigan Tech head coach Josh Buettner. “This game didn’t go how I expected—I thought we were going to have to get a lot of points in transition and second-chance points. Marcus was hot in the first half when they went zone. 22 assists is a really good number and I’m just happy we got it done.”

Ferris State netted the first two shots of the day before Tomashek accounted for eight-straight points, hitting two 3-pointers sandwiched between a dunk by Grant Warren off an assist by Tomashek to take an 8-4 lead at the 15:49 mark.

Tomashek splashed in another 3-pointer with 2:50 to go in the opening period to give the Huskies their largest lead of the day (31-22) before FSU strung together a 7-0 run to conclude the half. Chang Hoth converted an and-one before Tae Boyd and Justin Asi hit layups to conclude the first half scoring.

Tomashek led all scorers with 15 points through 20 minutes as Abel (5) and Nordgaard (5) combined for 10.

An and-one by Mykel Bingham gave Ferris State its only lead of the day at the 17:09 mark (35-34) before the Huskies began to pull away with three-straight 3-pointers nearing the midway point of the half.

Abel cashed in from deep before Ty Fernholz hit two of his three second-half 3-pointers to put the Black & Gold ahead by seven points (56-49) with 10:17 remaining.

A steal by Abel translated into a fastbreak layup by Tomashek to put Michigan Tech ahead by double-digits before earning the largest lead of the half moments later off a triple by Abel (65-51) with 7:15 to play.

With the lead cut to seven points off a Boyd layup, Terrian connected on a 3-pointer with 2:41 to play, as the game was ultimately decided off two free throws by Tomashek with 25 seconds to go, sealing the game at 79-68.

Boyd led four Bulldogs in double-figure scoring with 14 points and a team-best seven rebounds.
