ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – One person was injured in a residential stove fire early Sunday morning.

At approximately 4:16 a.m., the Escanaba Public Safety Department was dispatched to a residence on 4th Avenue South. By the time officers arrived, heavy smoke had filled the upper apartment.

Public Safety personnel quickly deployed attack lines to extinguish flames located in the kitchen area. Crews remained on scene for roughly three and a half hours, ensuring that the fire was fully contained and conducting overhaul operations.

Both the upper and lower apartments sustained fire, smoke, and water damage. One resident was transported to OSF St. Francis Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. His cat has been taken in by the Delta Animal Shelter until he is released from the hospital.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Escanaba Public Safety was assisted by the Ford River Township Fire Department, Rampart EMS, Delta County Central Dispatch, the City of Escanaba Electric Department, DTE, and the Red Cross.
