Toys for Tots collects toys for hundreds of children

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Inside Saint Michael’s Catholic Church in Marquette, the spirit of giving was on full display today as Saint Vincent de Paul hosted its annual Christmas giveaway. 19 News has this story of amazing generosity.

The families were invited to shop free of charge for toys, clothing and gifts, giving parents the chance to provide for their children during a challenging time of year.

“We provide toys free of charge for those of our friends who are in need, who are in need, who can’t afford it, so that we can ensure that all our children in the community have presence under the tree,” said Program Chair Denise Foye.

The event was made possible through donations from Toys for Tots, local businesses and contributions from local community members. Organizers say more than 250 families participated in shopping for over 230 children.

“You know, the generosity is, it’s overwhelming. I mean, we opened a box and somebody had given $100 in gift cards so we could go purchase the toys that we need. Because oftentimes people like to buy for young kids, but not always those middle aged, older children,” said Foye.

With prices of everything continuing to soar. The good people at Toys for Tots need to be savvy shoppers when choosing what to purchase for the holiday giveaway.

“The items I usually shop for are mainly for older children. Those items went up between five and ten dollars more than they were from last year,” said Toys for Tots area coordinator Tracey Tippett.

Everything you see here was purchased locally, making sure the funds stay within our community. Organizers say the generosity of our community continues to make the season brighter for those who need it most.

“All the toys, all the monetary donations stay in Marquette County, and then when I have to go shop for toys, I shop locally. So then all the money in that pay it forward thing stays all locally in the county,” said Tippett.
