NMU Women’s BB buries Upper Iowa

All 15 players scored in the game

WISCONSIN DELLS, Wis. – The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team moved to 4-0 in impressive fashion on Friday night, blowing out the Upper Iowa Peacocks 95-40 after a 59-point explosion in the first half.

Northern erupted out of the gates, leading 31-11 after the first quarter, shooting 12-19 (63.2%). The offense didn’t slow down in the second, scoring 28 points to hold a sizable 59-23 lead at the break. NMU shot 24-40 (60.0%) from the field in the first 20 minutes. NMU would go on to score 36 more points in the second half en route to a 55-point thumping of the Peacocks.

It is NMU’s highest offensive output since scoring 102 vs. Finlandia on November 16, 2013, and also the largest margin of victory since that same game.

All 15 Wildcats that played found the scoresheet, led by Jacy Weisbrod with 22. Madison Schroeder (10) was the only other ‘Cat to reach double figures, a true testament to the balance and depth that this squad has. Included in the scoring was first career points for Megan Marta, Addison Baumgart, and Haddie Showen, as well as the first NMU points for Isabella Slocum.

For as good as the Green and Gold were offensively, they were equally stout defensively. The Peacocks shot just 14-51 (27.5%) overall and 5-21 (23.8%) from three. NMU forced Upper Iowa into 17 turnovers and no Peacock reached double figures in scoring.

With the lead safely intact for much of the game, no Wildcat played more than 20 minutes. That meant a lot of opportunity for everyone throughout the lineup. On top of everyone scoring. 13/15 recorded a rebound, led by Alyssa Hill with 13. NMU dominated the glass to a tune of 53-25. Northern also led in points in the paint 44-14 and assists 18-5.

This is Northern’s second straight season getting out of the gates hot, as they set a program record in 2024-25 with an 8-0 start.

How it Happened
It was a quick start for the Wildcats, a pace they’d maintain the rest of the night. NMU scored the first seven points and led by double digits at 12-2 less than four minutes in. Weisbrod then connected on three triples, to go along with Faith Walder hitting back-to-back driving layups. For good measure, Addison Pytleski hit her second three in the final minute to lead 31-11 after 10 minutes.

After an Upper Iowa bucket, NMU broke out on a 9-0 run to lead 40-14. With 4:17 left in the half, Ava Bates recorded her first bucket to break 50 points and lead 51-19. She’d add a three, along with Weisbrod’s fourth, to lead 59-23 at halftime.

NMU shot 60% from both the field (24-40) and three (9-15) in the half, while committing only three turnovers and pulling down 15 more rebounds (25-10). Weisbrod led the way with 15 at the break.

Northern went on five unanswered runs of seven points or greater in the first half and
24-40 and 9-15 (both 60.0) with only 3 TO’s and rebounds 25-10 quickly put together two more in the third quarter. NMU outscored the Peacocks 16-9 in the frame and led 75-32.

Weisbrod and CJ Romero added threes in the early minutes of the fourth, two of NMU’s season-high 12 made threes. The Wildcats cruised to the finish line, outscoring UIU 20-8 in the final stanza.

Up Next
The Wildcats will look to move to 5-0 on the season when they take on Lewis at 6 p.m. ET on Saturday, November 15 in Wisconsin Dells.
