Photographer David Graham speaks about ‘American Dreams’ exhibition at Bay College

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – Thursday afternoon, Bay College welcomed an internationally-renowned photographer to campus for an artist talk and reception.

David Graham has worked in color photography since 1979. His photographs have been published in magazines like The New York Times, Forbes, Fortune, and Details. He has also shot ad campaigns for companies like Mastercard.

His exhibition at Bay College’s Besse Gallery, titled American Dreams, documents scenes of life across the United States. Some photos were taken in the last few years, while others date as far back as 1981.

“I hope that it’s work that’s very penetrable, that you can go in and look at pictures and see familiar kinds of locations or buildings or people, soak it up and feel like you understand that this is American,” Graham said. “I’m glad that we had the show here, and it’s a wonderful experience.”

To promote the exhibition, Graham had the piece shown below put on a local billboard last month. The image depicts the garage of his neighbor, who painted it in the style of artist Piet Mondrian.

“We felt great about it,” said Graham. “He drove all the way up from De Pere, which is in Wisconsin. He loved it. It was like an award for him.”

Graham and his wife, Terri Warpinski, own a studio in De Pere called newARTSpace. In addition to running the studio and his photography, Graham serves as a professor emeritus at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He previously taught photography at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, Sarah Lawrence College, and the International Center of Photography.
