MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Marquette Police Department officer was treated for injuries after being punched by an armed robbery suspect.
Around 1:55 a.m. on July 18, police officers responded to an armed robbery report at the Midjim Convenience Store at 301 W. Fair Avenue. A male reportedly robbed the business of merchandise while armed with a baseball bat.
Responding officers located the suspect outside the business, still holding a baseball bat. Upon contact, the suspect put the bat down and initially began to follow the officers’ commands. Moments later, as officers were approaching, the suspect became noncompliant and began to run away.
A short foot pursuit ensued, and officers were able to catch the suspect. At this time, the suspect punched an officer in the face, causing injury to the officer. The suspect was eventually brought into custody.
The officer was taken to UPHS-Marquette for treatment of injuries and was released. The suspect was also taken to UPSH-Marquette for evaluation. He was later lodged at the Marquette County Jail.
The suspect, a 40-year-old Ishpeming man, was arrested on multiple charges, including armed robbery (a life felony), assaulting/resisting/obstructing a police officer and causing injury (a four-year felony), and third-degree retail fraud (a 93-day misdemeanor).
Marquette police were assisted by the Northern Michigan University Police Department, the Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, the Marquette City Fire Department, and UPHS-Marquette EMS.
