Friends of the Escanaba Public Library to host ice cream social & book sale June 11

ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Friends of the Escanaba Public Library are kicking off the summer season on Wednesday, June 11.

The group will host its annual ice cream social on the north lawn at 6 p.m. Attendees can enjoy cake, ice cream, and a performance by the City Band.

The free event serves as the start of this year’s summer reading program. It is also a celebration of the work the Friends of the Library do throughout the year.

“Friends of the Library is a nonprofit organization that was started in 1988 by a bunch of book enthusiasts,” said Friends of the Escanaba Public Library President Kelly Pepin. “We have money that supplies for all the author series that come in, Mango languages, Ancestry.com, the update of the computers, digitization of the newspapers, the Story Walk here in the garden. The library is not just about books anymore. ‘Far more than you expect’ is our tagline.”

To help fund that work, the Friends will hold a used book sale in the City Hall foyer before the social from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Books will be available to purchase for $1. Cash and checks will be accepted.
