ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – In response to ICE raids across the country and the President’s deployment of the National Guard and the Marines to protests in Los Angeles this week, citizens of Delta County took to the streets Tuesday afternoon.
Delta County Unified and the Unitarian Universalist Bay de Noc Fellowship demonstrated on three corners at the intersection of Lincoln Road and Ludington Street. Protestors carried signs with phrases like “No Kings, No Autocracy,” “Fight Fascism,” and “Reject Hate.”
Delta County Unified founder Leah Belanger believes that the military presence in Los Angeles is only “amping up” tensions. She says the demonstrators wanted to show that they stand with the city during this time.
“Our military is not supposed to be used against the citizens of this country, and that is what Trump is doing,” said Belanger. “He is taking our military and using them to threaten citizens of this country. That affects everybody. If he can do it there, he can do it anywhere.”
On Saturday, June 14, Delta County Unified will hold a Flag Day rally in Ludington Park from noon to 4 p.m. Speakers will cover topics like immigration, the military, and education throughout the day.
