MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Thursday, May 8, at the Park Cemetery, the Marquette Regional History Center is holding the 20th Cemetery Walk at 1 p.m. This walk is one mile and about an hour and a half long. There are three tour options: a self-guided tour, a guided tour, and a seated tour.
This year’s tour topic is in honor of the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, also known as Victory in Europe Day. The cemetery has posters and signs with information about each stop. There are 10 stops in total, some with two stories. Each stop is a different story of how a Marquette community member helped and had an impact on the war. “I find it particularly interesting when we have family members come,” said Beth Gruber, J.M. Longyear Research Library research librarian. “The gentleman was a paratrooper on D-Day, and at least one of his daughters is coming. So, hearing some of her stories, I think, is what I’m looking forward to.”
The self-guided tours are open from 1 to 3 p.m., allowing viewers to travel at their own pace. The guided and seated tour is at 6 p.m., meeting at the front of Park Cemetery, for the seated tour organizers’ advice, and bring your own chair. For more information on the Cemetery Walk tours, go to the Marquette Regional History Center website.
