GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – One week ago, a group of U.P. students was preparing for a big competition. They’ve since returned home after a successful showing.
The Gwinn High School Quiz Bowl had an undefeated season, earning a 32 – 0 record. They won all four tournaments to become the State of Michigan Class C/D champions.
Over the weekend, the team went to Chicago to compete in the Small School National Tournament. Gwinn went 9 – 4, ending their year with an overall win-loss record of 41 – 4. The team placed 13th in the entire Small Schools Division Tournament and 4th in the Small-Small Division. Member Thomas Jenkins was Gwinn’s top scorer, as well as fourth highest-scoring player in the National Small Schools Division.
According to Coach Dan Turecky, the Gwinn High School Quiz Bowl team followed their “Quest to Be Best” theme from the beginning of the year.
“Not too bad for a small town in the U.P., eh?” Turecky said.
