GWINN, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Gwinn High School Quiz Bowl team has made their way to the top this season, earning a perfect 32-0 record. Coach Dan Turecky says, it’s the best year they’ve ever had.
“This is a dream team, a dream season,” said Turecky. “A capstone of my career.”
The team recently won the Class C/D High School Quiz Bowl State Championship on April 12 at Michigan State University. This qualified them for the national championship happening in Chicago this weekend. Teammates are excited to be the first to represent Gwinn at a level that hasn’t been reached before.
“I feel a lot of people look down on Gwinn,” said senior Charles Lininger. “To be apart of a team that actively sticks it to that bad reputation, it feels fulfilling.”
Majorly affecting this team is their dynamic together, with each student bringing their own areas of expertise to the table. Team captain Donald Jourden says it’s an enjoyable time, even apart from the competitions.
“when were not at a tournament, were having a great time, we’re laughing, having fun,” said Jourden. “When we show up, we know it’s game time, we lock in.”
The seniors on this team are a great example of how a small school can have such a large impact on its students experiences.
“Success of students is paramount here in Gwinn,” said Turecky. “This is best demonstrated by our continued winning the academic tournaments.”
