MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day and Snowbound Books in Marquette is celebrating all week long with a spirit week.
“It gets people in the door and it gives us an opportunity to just reach out to the community and have more fun,” said Snowbound Manager Bonny Mahin. “And it’s just really trying to build up some good energy for Independent Bookstore Day on Saturday.”
There are themed days all week like Plaid Day on Tuesday and Dress Up Day on Thursday where shoppers are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book character, which Mahin said is the one she’s most excited for.
“For me it’s just like an extra day of dress Halloween, which is my favorite holiday,” said Mahin. “I get to break out of my old costume gear that doesn’t get to come out before October so that’s a lot of fun.”
On Saturday, snowbound will be throwing a party with discounts, food trucks, scavenger hunts, and even special drinks from Blossom Bird Bubble Tea across the street. Mahin said this year could be a little bigger celebration for Marquette.
“Indie Bookstore Day for sure is always one of our biggest days of the year. It’s so wonderful to see all our customers come out,” said Mahin. “This year might be a little bit bigger because again we’ve got the other book stores so we’re really excited about that so we’re really trying to support those guys as well.”
National Bookstore Day has been around for 13 years now, and this year there are around 1,200 participating businesses nationwide. Mahin said these bookstores each make a unique difference in the communities they’re a part of.
“Book stores, especially indie book stores are really pillars of the community, they’re places where people can come and feel safe, all of that money goes directly back into the community, there’s more money that goes to the authors,” sad Mahin. “There’s countless good reasons to support local indies.”
The party on Saturday will be all day long, with the “Dia De Los Tacos” food truck available from two to five.
