MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Geoff and Jon’s Record Show is back in season. From Thursday to Sunday at the Ore Dock Brewing Company, thousands of vinyl records, CDs, cassette tapes, books, and posters will be on sale.
“This is a four day, 50 hour show, so there’s definitely plenty of time to explore and ask questions,” said Jon Teichman, owner of local record store, The Emporium.
The shows began in 2013. When Geoff Walker of Detroit wanted to lighten his record collection, his brother suggested he come to Marquette and sell them at the Ore Dock Brewing Company. A few shows later, Jon came aboard and has been a part ever since.
“In 2013, I drove up from Detroit with 1,500 records, we borrowed some tables from sadly defunct Ben Franklin store, and set them up by the fireplace. At 5pm, dozens of people came through the door and took home lots of records, so we did it again and again,” said Geoff Walker, the record show’s organizer.
Now, they host five local record shows a year, with close to 10,000 items to offer. Through its success, the long time friends both say that the community support is what’s made it so special.
“Records aren’t light and the boxes are full, they weight about 65lbs each. Yesterday we had a dozen people show up to just help. That really speaks to the sense of family and community that Marquette offers us, and that we are so very thankful for,” said Walker.
Along with the record show, the weekend at Ore Dock Brewing Co. will include an assortment of live music, trivia, and a cartoon watch party.
“Everybody’s interests are welcome and everyone is encouraged to come out, and it definitely is a ‘must be there’ kind of thing,” said Teichman.
