Portion of road in Presque Isle Park to close Monday for salamander migration

MARQUETTE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Next week, some of Marquette’s smallest inhabitants will embark on a big journey.

According to a public service announcement by the Marquette Police Department, the City will be closing a portion of Peter White Drive in Presque Isle Park, in cooperation with the Superior Watershed Partnership and the NMU Biology Department. The closure aims to keep the blue-spotted salamander population safe as it migrates.

The southwest bend of Peter White Drive from the ice cream store pavilion to the gate north of the pavilion will be closed to vehicles daily at 8 p.m. from March 17 to May 15 or until the migration is complete. Barricades will be set up and removed daily to prevent vehicular traffic in the migration area. Foot traffic will be permitted during regular park hours.

For more information on the closure, contact the Superior Watershed Partnership at (906) 228-609.

On Monday, WZMQ 19 will have more on the blue-spotted salamander and its migration habits in an interview with Moosewood Nature Center.
