Iron Mountain man arrested on felony ammunition charge

IRON MOUNTAIN, Mich. (WZMQ) – An Iron Mountain man is facing a felony firearm charge for illegally possessing ammunition.

On Monday, February 24, the Iron Mountain Police Department was notified of a social media post made by an individual living in the 500 block of 7th Street. The post contained several short videos showing the subject in possession of what looked like a large quantity of ammunition.

The footage showed what appeared to be a backpack containing mixed ammunition, including .22 caliber, 99mm, 12-gauge shotgun shells, and magazines loaded with .308 and .223 caliber rifle ammunition. The subject, whose face was visible in the videos, was identified as someone the police department had previously encountered.

The individual, identified as 41-year-old Cory Conn, is prohibited from possessing firearms and ammunition under Michigan Compiled Law 750.224f. He is also on bond for charges related to carrying a concealed weapon, which occurred in August of 2024.

After obtaining a search warrant, the Critical Incident Response Team (C.I.R.T.) was activated to safely execute the warrant and minimize risk to both the public and law enforcement. C.I.R.T. is a specialized group—consisting of offers from the Iron Mountian Police Department, Kingsford Public Safety, Norway Police, and the Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office—trained to handle high-risk situations.

C.I.R.T. successfully apprehended Conn outside of his residence. Officials searched the residence and found the ammunition seen in the video.

Conn was arraigned in the Dickinson County 95B District Court for possession of weapons and/or ammunition by a prohibited person. The felony charge carries a penalty of up to five years and/or a $5,000 fine.

Unconnected to this incident, Conn was also arraigned for charges relating to pointing a laser light up at airplanes as they landed at the Ford Airport in Kingsford on or around January 16, 2025. This is a felony with a penalty of up to 5 years and/or a $10,000 fine.
