ESCANABA, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Catherine Bonifas Civic Center has completed a much-needed upgrade.
According to Escanaba Recreation Director Kim Peterson, the Civic Center has had the same flooring since it opened in 1967. Recently, all of the flooring was replaced, thanks in large part to a $20,000 Hannahville 2% grant.
In addition to giving the Civic Center a facelift, updating the facility benefits the long list of programs available to community members. It also better equips the center for its operations as an emergency shelter.
“Our after-school program has meals that we provide kids,” Peterson said. “We give them food to take home. They can utilize the game room, the gym. We have a reading program, free wifi. We have laptops people can use. We also have the Community Action Senior Center. We have kids in the building; we have seniors in the building. It goes hand-in-hand with the amount of traffic that we have in our facility every day.”
The Recreation Department now plans to pursue grants to update windows, doors, lighting, and insulation. Donations are always welcome, and anyone interested in contributing to the renovations can call (906) 786-4141.
