GRAND MARAIS, Mich. (WZMQ) – The Upper Peninsula community of Grand Marais holds a very important checkpoint for the UP200.
The checkpoint is a pivotal part of the race. There, sled dogs will all be given vet checks, along with meals for the mushers prepared by the Grand Marais Women’s Group. After a few hours of rest, the teams will start back up and make their ways back west.
With the lack of the race in the past two years, locals are excited to be a part of it once again. Businesses in the area are already seeing heavier foot traffic this winter.
“We can see the impact it’s having, while hotels are filling up, meaning our restaurants will be full and the activities will have people to participate in them,” said Jessica Flynn, owner of the Grand Marais Tavern.
The checkpoint in Grand Marais opens on Saturday, February 15 at 7 a.m. and will remain open until the last musher departs.
