SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, Mich. (WZMQ) – A Wisconsin woman died in a snowmobile crash in Schoolcraft County Friday evening.
Jan. 17 around 7:20 p.m., Michigan State Police troopers from the Manistique Outpost responded to a snowmobile crash on the Haywire Grade Trail near Thunder Lake Rd. in Inwood Township.
Some of the driver’s group, traveling further behind, arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and called 911. The group began lifesaving efforts, including CPR, prior to MSP’s arrival. Troopers arrived at the crash site by snowmobile, approximately three miles northwest of Thunder Lake Rd, and assisted in lifesaving efforts.
The 46-year-old woman from Dodgeville, Wisconsin died of her injuries and was pronounced dead by medical personnel.
A preliminary investigation revealed the driver was traveling southbound on the Haywire Grade Trail when she failed to negotiate a curve, causing the snowmobile to strike multiple trees. Alcohol or drug use is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
“We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and all those who knew the victim,” said Lt. Eckola, Michigan State Police Eighth District Public Information Officer. “We would like to thank our troopers, EMS personnel, and all first responders for their efforts, as well as the snowmobilers who assisted in transporting MSP to the crash location and those who provided lifesaving efforts before the arrival of troopers and EMS.”
