Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital hosts sixth annual Festival of Trees through Dec. 14

MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Upper Peninsula organizations are lighting up a Manistique healthcare organization for the holidays.

Now through Saturday, December 14, the Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital atrium looks like a winter wonderland for the sixth annual Festival of Trees.

“Every year, it brings businesses across the U.P. together,” said Hospital Marketing Director Sara Giles. “They donate prizes, they decorate trees, they sponsor wreaths.”

Each of the 30 trees is thematically decorated, with unique prizes underneath that anyone can win.

“We have a variety of prizes online in the auction if you can’t make it,” Giles said. “Those prizes range from getaways, gift cards, wreaths, trees. The raffle, however, you have to come here so you can put your raffle tickets in the prize you want to win. Our raffle tickets are five for $10.”

The festival also includes fun events throughout the week.

“We actually turn down all the lights in the atrium and do yoga this Wednesday at 7 p.m.,” said Giles. “We also have a paint and sip class at LaTulip Brewing Company in Cooks, Michigan, and that’s always a fun time.”

The funds raised from the auction, raffles, and events will allow the hospital to purchase new EEG and EKG machines. Giles said it will also help staff provide the best care to patients.

“One thing we really value at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital is staying up to date—state-of-the-art equipment, always reinvesting in our community, and making sure our patients have what they need for the proper diagnostics,” she said.

Festival of Trees auction and raffle winners will be announced on Saturday. Names will be drawn in the atrium, and those who cannot attend can watch the event live on Facebook.

Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital invites the public to enjoy this festive display of the community’s creativity and spirit of giving.

“Every year, it just keeps getting bigger and better,” Giles said. “It shines light on local businesses, but it just shows their generosity. Often we get the compliments and it’s like, ‘No, this is the community. These are the sponsors.’ They’re so amazing!”

Imagine never having to pay property taxes again. The proposal would eliminate property taxes statewide, allowing homeowners and businesses to own their land without any ongoing government fees. But with property taxes funding everything from schools to public safety to roads, the big question is—where will that money come from? The plan calls for a bigger slice of state sales tax to be redirected to local governments. To help cover the gap, the petition also shifts 10% of state income, marijuana, alcohol, and tobacco tax revenue to cities and counties. sot Opponents OF THE PLAN worry it could jeopardize local funding. The petition is now gathering signatures for a spot on the 2026 ballot.
