MANISTIQUE, Mich. (WZMQ) – Manistique business owners are encouraging shoppers to visit locally-owned shops when hunting for holiday deals this Black Friday weekend.

November 30, businesses across America are participating in Small Business Saturday. Manistique business owners have a history of going all-out for the day.

“Our town is just so magical this time of year,” said Mandy Fierens, owner of Drift Alchemy. “Everyone decorates their windowfronts and it’s so cozy. It’s like we live in a Hallmark town. It’s just about getting out there and doing as much as we can to spend our dollars locally.”

Beginning at 10 a.m., shoppers can stop by The Mill to pick up a Small Business Passport. Then, they can visit participating businesses to fill the passport with stamps. Shoppers can return filled passports by 5 p.m. to receive a special “Shop Small Manistique” shopping tote, as well as a chance to win gift certificates from local shops and restaurants.

During this economically challenging time, Fierens says Small Business Saturday is a chance for the community to make a positive impact on the business owners in Manistique.

“We’re so lucky here in Manistique that every store in town has something really unique and special to offer,” she said. “Not only is it a beautiful experience to come in and buy that special gift that maybe isn’t anywhere else, it’s also really exciting to know that you’re making a difference. You’re keeping them in business by supporting them.”

The Mill is located at 216 South Cedar Street. Click here to see a list of other Manistique businesses participating in Small Business Saturday.

From cutting down your own tree from their back lot of live trees to pre-cut trees of every size, Meisters a has tree to fit any household. Owner, George Meister explains the selection. "Balsam Fir, Canaan Fir and Fraser Fir. We've also got some Scotch Pine and White Pine, and some Spruce around as well, some Blue Spruce and White Spruce," said Meister. But George has his favorite "Yes, we really focus on furs for a couple of reasons. One, they grow well for us, but they're also the ones that have that classic evergreen scent that you think of when you think of the smell of Christmas trees," said Meister. On opening day most folks opted to cut their own tree, but it's harder than it looks "This year is quite difficult, but we picked a bigger tree than normal," said Christopher Lemkuil. "Yeah, it was a blue spruce. In the past, I think we got a Frazier but the spruce was a little harder to cut down, I guess."
